Prima Facie

This is a one-woman show starring Jodie Comer, which was first written and performed by Australian playwright and actor Suzie Miller. The play debuted in the UK in 2022 and is currently running on Broadway. The show has a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes with no intermission. It explores the theme of sexual consent and aims to raise awareness among young people about their human rights and the importance of non-violence. The play has received critical acclaim for its meaningful and touching performance, carrying important messages.

The story revolves around a lawyer who initially believes in the power of the legal system to protect everyone from injustice. However, as the protagonist encounters a dilemma where no one can provide a solution, she begins to lose faith in what she once believed. The play sheds light on the struggles faced when it comes to issues of sexual consent. In scenes where only two individuals are present, it becomes challenging to determine the truth. Even evidence of a relationship between two people cannot guarantee the absence of sexual assault. The play highlights that even married couples can experience such traumas, yet there are no rules in place to protect them, and society may be skeptical about such occurrences. It questions the concept of truth within the legal system, where the focus is on legal truths rather than the real truths individuals may face.

Jodie Comer’s career took off from a young age, and her talent quickly gained recognition, leading to numerous opportunities on TV shows and even in Hollywood productions. Prima Facie marks Jodie’s first stage play, which is remarkable considering she did not attend acting school. As a one-woman show, it presented a significant challenge for Jodie, who had to memorize all the lines from the 18 scenes. It required not only physical energy but also the ability to convey the right groove and rhythm to captivate the audience. Jodie’s performance was exceptional, seamlessly carrying the show forward and making time fly by unnoticed.

Watching Jodie’s live performance is a surreal experience, especially when seated up close to her. Her incredible performance leaves one speechless. I was fortunate enough to obtain her autograph outside the stage, and it revealed her authentic and humble nature, deserving of the love from all her fans. I wish her every success in her future career and hope to have the opportunity to watch her live performances again, even if it means traveling a long way to New York from Hong Kong. Every effort would be worthwhile to witness such brilliance.
